Traje: Women and Weaving in Guatemala

Home | Projects | Showreel

Traje looks at the transmission of culture and identity via weaving and the wearing of ‘traje’ in Central America.

'Traje’ refers to the customary clothing of 28 Mayan language groups strewn across Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. These colourful items are hand made with the use of a simple backstrap loom then painstakingly embroidered with designs, symbols and stories that date back to antiquity. The clothing is created and worn almost exclusively by Mayan women, who are the guardians of the tradition. Today, the pressures of changing values, global economies, and discrimination are threatening the Mayan weaving practice. But Mayan women of all walks of life are resisting the homogenising effects of western culture.

Traje tells the story of three Mayan women who weave and wear their traditional dress with pride.
